America's story is the collective stories of her rivers and ports. By the mid nineteenth century the template of cities and towns was largely in place. Yet, the rail network did not fully develop until late in that century and interstate highways came into their own in the mid twentieth century. Commerce, communities and families grew along the pathways and byways of America's rivers and coasts.
Touring America along the rivers and coasts is a popular and comfortable way to explore our past, as well as enjoy the beauty and hospitality of our diverse nation. This site is our way of sharing a bit of history of some of the places you may cross in your travels. Rather than publishing a book or pamphlet and asking the reader to thumb through it, the site uses a map that can be navigated naturally, letting the user easily choose which sites they want to investigate before they begin their exploration. Our maps are customized to match the routes and locations used by cruise operators. If you're on a cruise you can use follow the ship on the map and check out places of interest at your next stop. If you're thinking about going on a cruise, use the map to get a preview of the adventures that await you.
